Pain Management

Pain Medicine is a medical subspecialty that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of the many types of pain. Pain Medicine physicians are typically anesthesiologists, neurologists, or physical medicine and rehabilitation specialists who have completed a Pain Medicine fellowship and become board certified by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), most commonly the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) or American Board of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (ABPM&R). Typical conditions treated by pain management specialists include but are not limited to the following:

  • Musculoskeletal pain
  • Spinal pain
  • Neuropathic pain
  • Unresolved post-surgical pain
  • Chronic pain

The goal of pain management is to relieve pain by accurately diagnosing it and then treating its underlying cause. Common musculoskeletal disorders that are diagnosed include conditions and injuries of the neck, back, and joints. Common treatment options available at Orthopedic Specialists of Northwest Indiana include the following:

  • Spinal cord stimulator trials
  • Joint and soft tissue injections
  • Cervical, thoracic and lumbar fluoroscopic guided spinal injections
  • Epidural steroid injections
  • Selective nerve root blocks
  • Facet joint injections
  • Medial branch blocks
  • Radiofrequency neurotomy

One of the unique features of the pain management subspecialty is that no patient is treated the same. Because the causes of pain can be complex and numerous, pain management physicians tailor each treatment plan to meet the individual needs of the patient. This type of approach provides patients with a long lasting pain solution that can not find in other places. If you are in pain and are ready for it to be reduced or eliminated, please contact Orthopedic Specialists of Northwest Indiana to arrange an appointment with one of our pain management specialists.
